Streamline Your Professional Temp Hiring in 8 Easy Steps:

1) Be educated. Partner with your vendor, know the market rates, and adjust your budget for a realistic expenditure.  Otherwise, you are wasting everyone’s time, including your own.

2)  Re-examine your contract rates with third-party staffing vendors.  With supply so limited, staffing firms are submitting their candidates to the highest bidder. The “bargain” rates you (or your VMS) contracted for two years ago might be below market now – which could explain why you aren’t seeing quality resumes.

3) Explore the what-ifs: Remove all foreseeable obstacles to making a fast hiring decision before you start seeing candidates. Ex: if “Manager A” is going to be away for two weeks, find a way to interview without Manager A.

4) Limit the number of interviewers:  Empower one or two people to make the hire. This isn’t a perm hire.  Moreover, in the unlikely event you have to replace the contractor, a single phone call to the agency will put that in motion.

5) Limit the number of interviews per candidate:  We’ve seen clients successfully use online, phone or team interviews to save time.

6) See 2 or 3 competent candidates, then pull the trigger:  Again, this is not a perm hire. Don't let "perfect" get in the way of "good".

7) Make an offer today:  Your candidates have more interviews scheduled for tomorrow. A candidate who is genuinely interested will accept your offer and cancel the rest of his or her interviews.

8) Hedge your bets: If you’ve made an offer to a candidate who won’t immediately accept and cancel other interviews, he or she may be leveraging your opportunity for a better offer elsewhere. Put a 24-48 hour deadline on the offer, and move onto the next best candidate, or start interviewing additional candidates.

Remember, there’s a small window when you have the candidate’s full attention. Use the tips above to minimize the risk of losing your top candidate to competitors.
